Save the Whales!

I recently attended the premiere of Minds in the Water in Newquay, a film about pro surfer Dave Rastovich and his crew of ocean warriors on their mission to protect and conserve whales, dolphins and marine life. The work they are doing is so inspiring and really making a difference to the treatment of cetaceans across the globe. If you haven't seen it already, take a look at the visual petition set up by Rasta, which now includes names from Kelly Slater to Ben Harper - www.visualpetition.com/slippages/viewpetition.php

There are also step by step instructions on the site on how to sign up and show your support to the cause.

Green Foundation Course - The Eden Project

When I heard about the Green Foundation Course at the Eden Project it sounded like an opportunity too good to miss. I rang up straight away to book and luckily nabbed one of the last few spaces left on the course.

The programme is designed for businesses to learn more about sustainability and how to take their business forward into a low carbon future. It takes places over 10 days spread over a period of 6 weeks, during which you learn about the impact of our societies on the earth, the changing climate and ways in which we can help curb the stress we are putting on our resources.

The first few days was a wake up call to say the least. I've always been aware and had an active interest in environmental issues, but it's easy to forget. Talks by experts in the field really brought home the fact that it will come to a point where we will have to take action out of need and survival, rather than out of choice. The climate is changing rapidly before our eyes and that is something we can't deny. We only have to look at the increase of natural disasters and more extreme weather as proof. Floods, droughts, hurricanes, earthquakes, it's scary stuff, the future is pretty scary that's why it's so hard to think about it.

The classroom

What is so inspiring about the course however is that there are people on it that really know their stuff and are active in making changes for the good of the environment. There were about 30 people on my course and it is the 17th course Eden have run so if you do the maths, that's a lot of people that are now aware of the issues that face us who perhaps weren't before. If everyone then tells their friends and they tell theirs, the ripple will hopefully turn into waves. Eden are educating people at grassroots level how we as individuals and as businesses can make positive changes and influence others into doing the same.

Once you start to think about it, the more you realise that there are so many small changes we can make in our lives that will make a huge difference, from turning things off at the switch to eating less meat. It's imperative to be aware as consumers so that we can make educated decisions about the things we choose to buy and consume, after all it's the consumers that are supplying the demand. Also we can ask questions and not accept things as they are. I could go on but that's enough ranting hey!

The Biomes

We also get the chance to have a look behind the scenes of the Eden Project and learn about their sustainability programmes and operations, and it's all fascinating stuff! I think Eden are brilliant for putting on the course - the fact that it is free, with all refreshments provided is a bit of a bonus too! I am only 3 days in but I am looking forward to what the rest of the experience has to offer.

Spending last weekend at home in Hampshire and missing all the epic weather and waves in Cornwall was not particularly easy. However all was made slightly more bearable when I received a package from America in the post.....the chaps at team Globe had sent me over this awesome prize pack for coming second in the Design a Cruiser competition back in March. All that stress seems worth it now! The trainers are sick, can't wait to go show them off!

Busy, Busy, Busy.......

Hey all, life has been super busy recently hence the lack of blog posts so I just thought I would give you an update on what's been a happenin'. I've just moved to Newquay, Cornwall, which after spending 4 months in land-locked Petersfield is a welcome transition. It is sooo good to be living by the sea again although there are a lot more distractions here, mainly waves. It would be rude not to though hey!

As well as freelance illustrating and designing, I've also started a new job coaching with the O'Neil Surf Academy, which is a lot of fun! We've got some exciting things happening at the academy this summer and you can keep up to date with everything by checking out the website, the blog or facebook page.

I'm also working on some exciting design projects at the moment, for companies such as TurfDog, and local Newquay based eco clothing brand inkydeep, amongst others, so I shall be posting these up soon!

I went to the Pitt Rivers museum, Oxford yesterday for some inspiration. It's the most amazing place EVER! It's one mans collection of treasures and curiosities from the the 19th - early 20th century. It's full of things like shruken heads, divinations cards from the americas and african feather headdresses to name but a few. I think another trip back will be on the cards soon. No pun intended. There was the most beautiful collection of butterflies which inspired the above graphic. ~~I think i will also enter this one into all tropical so I'll be reminding you to vote soon!~~*

Howard Tangye Drawing Masterclass

One of my best Christmas presents this year was a ticket to the Howard Tangye Drawing Masterclass from my mother. This was the first instalment of the these workshops at the Design Museum, which from now on are hopefully going to be a regular feature. Moderated by guest curator Colin McDowell, the day consisted of live drawing by Howard Tangye. It was fascinating to watch the extremely talented artist at work, and to observe a blank piece of paper be transformed into a beautiful piece of artwork. We were also encouraged to participate in the drawing, whilst Tangye offered expert advice and tips.

The event exceeded no more than 30 people, which made the day an intimate and informal. Howard welcomed any questions throughout and he was very relaxed and conversational. Afterwards you could look at the drawings close up, they were all incredibly beautiful of course and I had resist the urge to snatch one of the wall and run away with it.

I went to see the Drawing Fashion exhibition yesterday at the Design Museum. I was very impressed with the selection of works, especially by Gruau and Berthoud, and it was really great to see these amazing illustrations close up.

I also found out what one of my christmas presents from my mum is, as she couldn't bear to keep it secret anymore. She has bought me a ticket to a fashion drawing masterclass with Howard Tangye in January, which I'm super excited about as he is one of my favourite all time fashion illustrators. I'm sure he can teach me a thing or two!

Rob Machado's Melali Premier @ Hurley HQ Costa Mesa 19/11/10

I was super excited to hear that Rob Machado would be playing with his band at the screening of his new surf film Melali at the Hurley HQ in Costa Mesa. I am a huge fan, not only of his surfing but of his humanitarian work too. He does a lot of work with Waves for Water, a company set up by pro surfer Jon Rose, which provides water filtration systems to impoverished communities that have no access to clean drinking water. He is also a very cool guy, and an amazingly talented surfer so I wasn't going to miss this opportunity to see one of my surf idols in the flesh!

The combination of the live music with the movie playing live alongside worked really well. There are some beautiful shots and some sick surfing by Rob himself, Kelly and Dane Reynolds amongst others, and the music heightened the whole viewing experience. There were free tacos beforehand and yummy drinks all evening courtesy of Sambazon, one of Rob's sponsors. Oh and not to mention meeting the man himself....so yes I had a good time!
